A probationary officer (PO) or management trainee as the name signifies is the entry-level designation for a new employee when it comes to officer assignments in Indian banks. IBPS’s Common Bank Exam and Interview is the newly-set standard or screening process that is used by the public and private banks to recruit suitable persons to PO positions, and one has to clear IBPS exam for a banking career with them.

Becoming a PO at younger age is somewhat a dream professional achievement. A PO can even become the managing director of the serving bank if he/she gets selected at the right age and contributes greatly to the growth of the firm. The current MD of SBI, Mrs. Arundhati Bhattacharya joined the bank as a PO in 1977, and now she is the youngest administrator of the elite PSU at the age of 57.
After the IBPS selection, the bank will send a new employee to undergo probation or training period that lasts up-to 2 years; they can terminate the contract of a person during this period if they find him/her unfit for the managerial job. After training the candidate will be promoted as Assistant manager and will get a variety of banking duties depending on personal interest or the at the discretion of the institution. Eventually, a PO will head the various divisions of the bank during the service tenure. As of 2014, the gross salary of newly appointed bank PO selected through IBPS is approximately 30,000/-INR, and the CTC totals around 50000 /-INR for a Metro posting.

Registration with IBPS qualifies the candidates for the objective-style online exam. Tentative dates of the IBPS PO exam 2014 is as listed above, however, the actual date and center of the online exam will be intimated to each candidate through a call letter a few weeks after the successful web enrollment. Before registration one should thoroughly read the eligibility conditions for applying the PO exam. Typically, a candidate with a university degree, falling in 20-30 age-group is eligible for IBPS PO exam.

IBPS has a newly introduced section in the PO application form for the candidates to choose bank preferences. The preferences you enter here will be used to decide your final placement as a Probationary officer.
